Man Arrested for Neglect

On June 11, 2016 the Jackson County Sheriff's Department and the Crothersville Police Department responded to a call of a child who had wandered away from home in the 6000 block of South County Road 1025 East just outside of Crothersville.

It was determined the 3 year old boy lives near the complainant, which is a tenth of a mile away. The boy was wearing only a t-shirt.

Crothersville Police took the child back to the home but could not get anyone to answer the door. While trying to find someone who was supposed to be watching the child, he ran back inside the residence. At this time officers believed that he was at home alone.

Units from Crothersville and Jackson County again tried to get someone to answer the door but to no avail. Officers then went inside the residence and found the first floor cluttered with trash, dirty clothing, soiled eating utensils, and used beverage containers. The same conditions were found throughout the house while officers looked for the child or any person who was supposed to be watching the little boy.

On the second floor, officers found the little boy in a bedroom with his 11 year old brother. The older brother stated that both of them were home alone and that he did not know that his little brother had wandered away from the house. The oldest child stated that he could not call any of the adults who lived there because he did not have a phone anywhere in the residence.

As officers continued to check the residence, the father of the boys, identified as Raymond Davis, III, 49 of Crothersville, was found asleep on the third floor and had to be awakened by the police to talk to them about the situation. The oldest child stated he did not know any of the adults were in the house at all.

Davis told the police that he did not know that he had been left to watch his sons after the grandparents had left the residence and he was unaware that the boy had wandered off. The boy had been gone for approximately one hour, wearing only a t-shirt.

Davis was arrested for neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony, and is being held without bond in the Jackson County Jail.

The incident was investigated by Reserve Deputy Scott Davis and Crothersville Police Officer Brent Turner.
