Man Convicted. Will Serve 10 Years in Prison

On May 27, 2014 the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department was called to investigate a weapons offense in the Norman, Indiana area. Officers found a person that had been cut with a knife and had possibly sustained a gunshot wound. The suspect, Tony Mitchell fled the area prior to officers’ arrival.

                                                                                

After a JCSD investigation, Prosecutor Amy Marie Travis presented evidence to the Jackson Circuit Court, after which a warrant was signed by Judge Richard Poynter for the arrest of Tony D. Mitchell.

                                                                              

Mitchell requested that his case be tried by a jury in the Jackson Circuit Court. The twelve panel jury returned a verdict of guilty. Mitchell was sentenced to 10 years in the Indiana Department of Correction by Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Richard Poynter on the following charges;

                                                                              

  1. Aggravated Battery: knowingly or intentionally inflects injury on a    

               person. B Felony

 

  1. Aggravated Battery: injury causes serious permanent disfigurement.    

               B Felony

                                                                                

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jeff Chalfant presented the case to the Court.

 

JCSD Detective Tom Barker was the lead investigator. Barker was assisted by Crime Scene Technician Detective Robert Lucas, Sheriff Mike Carothers, and Deputy Jeff Walters.
