Drowning

On June 17, 2017 at approximately 9:10 PM the Jackson County Sheriff's Department received a report of an unconscious male who had been under water for several minutes in the 8000 block north on Base Road.

Deputy Rick Meyer, Hamilton Township Fire Department, Jackson County EMS and Crothersville Reseve Officer Travis McElfresh all responded to the scene. When Meyer arrived, CPR was being performed on Jean Yves Ishimwe.

Jackson County EMS transported him to Schneck Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Ishimwe, 23, of Rwanda (Eastern Africa) worked as an intern at Cummins. He was also a student at the University of Michigan.

Witnesses at the scene said Ishimwe had been riding a zip line across a family lake when he went into the water and never re-surfaced. Several people reportedly jumped into the water and pulled Ishimwe to shore and began CPR.

The incident remains under investigation by Jackson County Coroner Mike Bobb and Meyer.

An autopsy is scheduled for June 19.
